What we thought
Based in Cumbria, EDZ are an English brand I feel a bit bad for not coming across before now, given they’ve been creating performance merino wool clothing & accessories since 1995.
After rekindling my love of the outdoors a few years ago and spending more time than ever out camping and walking, I had a gap in my wardrobe that was base-layer shaped, and I’m pleased to say that this top has filled that gap perfectly for me.
I chose the medium in blue (also available in black and grey, sizes small through to XXL) and it’s a great fit and although I am quite tall and long-bodied, the sleeves are a generous length and plenty long enough for me.
The top is cut a little lower at the back, which helps to ensure a warm back even when bending over and the branding over one chest isn’t too in your face, as I’m really not a fan of outdoor gear that’s got massive logos plastered all over it.
Of course the great thing about Merino wool is that whilst you might have to pay a bit of a premium for it (one that’s well worth it in my experience) you are rewarded with performance that’s hard to beat.
- Long sleeves and thumb holes for extra warmth
- Extremely comfortable to wear
- Great at regulating my temperature
- Packs extremely well
- Versatile and can be worn as a base or mid-layer
- Matching leggings also available
- A few livlier colour options would be nice
Overall Rating (4.5 / 5)
This is a great base layer that’s a pleasure to wear. You stick it on and forget about it. It’s comfortable and moves with you, it keeps you warm when it needs to and cool on warmer days. My wife Shell said I had to mention that it washes well too, so uhm, there you go, it washes well!
The thumb holes that lead to longer-length sleeves thus helping keep your hands warm and the zipped neck are a winning combination and for the price, I think this makes a solid buy for autumn and winter outdoor escapades.
